MORE: 5 Personality Traits Most Linked To Happiness: How Many Do You Have?Ī Princeton University survey of more than 340,000 Americans ages 18 and older found that happiness rises after age 50 and that by the time people are 85, they are more satisfied with themselves than they were at 18. "These findings support other research showing that happiness increases over the life span," says Sonja Lyubomirsky, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, who has spent more than 20 years researching happiness. Nearly half of women in their 40s and 50s and one-third of women ages 60 and older reported being happier now than they were 20 years ago-and only 1 in 4 at any age reported being less happy. "Women feel a decade or two younger than their actual age because what they do in their day-to-day lives hasn't changed considerably." The upshot: Women 40 and older have the vitality of younger women but with the wisdom and confidence that come with age. ![]() "Being 50, 60, or 70 is different now than it was a generation ago," says Wayne State University sociologist Heather Dillaway, whose research focuses on women in midlife. That's what Prevention found when we conducted an exclusive national survey: Defying society's stereotypes about aging, our results revealed that women ages 40 and older are happier, more confident, and less stressed than they were 20 years ago.
